The Human Development Timebomb
by Rachelle Keeling, South Africa

With an ever increasing population, our planet is under increased pressure to supply resources to meet growing and constant demands. Our needs drive agricultural production, industry and mass consumption which have environmental consequences – from greenhouse gas to dwindling water supplies and vast quantities of waste. Our growing need for resources and space has pushed many of our planet’s species to the edge of extinction – and concerns for the future of these species become greater as humans continue on their current path. On average, we are living as though we have 1.5 planets, not just one. There is still time to rectify matters and live more sustainably, but the time is now to act and bring about the change our World so desperately needs.
